MLC helps clients eat more balanced meals, while volunteers serve dinners on 2nd and 4th Thursdays.

In January of 2020, Messiah Lutheran Church started helping Owen’s House, the local shelter for homeless women and children, in two ways.  One, we provide funds each month that allow the cooks to purchase nutritional foods to supplement meals; two, we volunteer on the serving line for supper on the 2d and 4th Thursdays of each month.  Since Owen’s House primarily depends on donated food to feed these women and children, the food purchased with our donations helps provide a more balanced diet, especially at breakfast.  A recent invoice included oranges, cheese, oatmeal, and yogurt.

Serving line volunteers typically meet at church at 4:30 and carpool to the site. Supper is served in 2 waves. After supper, we can sit and visit with clients for a few minutes before cleaning up.

Owen’s House in addition to housing and feeding single women and mothers and their children, provides a multi-month program that teaches women about life skills and helps them find jobs.  For homeless single women and for homeless mothers and their children not associated with the multi-month program, Owen’s House provides meals and emergency overnight housing.  The recent population MLC supported was approximately 120 women and 30 children under 12 years of age. Owen’s House is operated by the Downtown Rescue Mission of Huntsville.

Anyone desiring to financially support this outreach program can donate either online or by noting on checks, “Owen’s House.”  Volunteers who want to help by serving meals should contact Bill Emerson or Claire Strand.
