Messiah Lutheran Church participated again this year in the Huntsville Walk to Defeat ALS. Thanks to all of our walkers and everyone who supported the team.
About the Walk to Defeat ALS
Every year, hundreds of thousands of people across the country bring their determination, energy, and passion to the Walk to Defeat ALS® . More than just a few mile trek, it’s an opportunity to bring hope to ALS patients, to raise money for a cure, and to join together to fight for something we care about. The Walk to Defeat ALS® is our biggest annual event which raises funds to sustain patient care and support research for much of the following year. Approximately 165 walks are held around the country each year. Since 2000, the events have raised over $137 million toward our mission – a world without ALS. The Walk to Defeat ALS® empowers patients, friends, families, and the business community to fight back against a disease that leaves many feeling powerless.
Often referred to as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe. The life expectancy of an ALS patient averages 2 to 5 years from the time of diagnosis.
Every 90 minutes a person in this country is diagnosed with ALS and every 90 minutes another person will lose their battle against this disease. ALS occurs throughout the world with no racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic boundaries.
This crippling disease can strike anyone. Presently there is no known cause of the disease yet it still costs loved ones an average of $200,000 a year to provide the care ALS patients need. Help make a difference and donate or join a walk today.
